For the Crash Course Lovers

Two more Crash Course vids, I will admit that they are a bit more confusing than usual but it's still a great crash course when the test comes around. (see what I did there...)

Anyways Happy Thanksgiving.

OMG I Love Crash Course

Crash Course you have saved me again. This video goes over all that we have leaned over the past two days. Where would I be without you Crash Course?

I'm Crying.

I don't even know where to start. There is so much to remember, I just know that Crash Course will hopefully be my savior. Hopefully.

My Disorganized Mess

These are just pics of my work from yesterday, in prep for this test. I know they're messy but I assure you my work on the test was even messier.

Afternoon after the Test

Whew...that test was really rough, as most of my colleagues will also agrees. I don't think anyone, at least to my knowledge, finished before the hour. I was working the problems at the extent of my pace and I still had questions unfinished (usually I finish with time to spare). But all in all, I am glad it's over with and I am ready for the chapters to come.

Though I know its a little late here are some links to videos that explain percent composition. I found these to be dry for what they are worth but they get the job done.

Studying for the test Tomorrow

I found this video very useful for reviewing how to balance chemical equations.
Thanks to Crash Course. (again)

Ehh...

Yesterday we had our first quiz for the unit and to say the least it was rough. I think I did okay, but the lack of questions on the quiz worries me since each question was worth more. Overall, I hope that the next few lessons won't be terribly bad.

Remember This

Though this picture doesn't account for converting moles and Volume at STP, this is a really easy way to remember the conversions. All you need to know is what number you're using and if you're going into or out of moles. Divide In, Multiply Out. (DI-MO)

Hope this helps,

Buckle Up it's gonna be rough!

Let's just say the last pre-test was rough. For the last few pre-tests, I knew (to a degree) what I was doing, I could always remember (again somewhat) what we learned in Physical Science. This one was the first test that covered material not covered in Physical Science. To be honest it's a little nerve racking but I'm ready to take on the challenge. Also, on a side note, I'm rather enthusiastic for not doing a lab for this unit. It means I can focus on studying the material.

Anyways,

Night Before the Test

Here are a few more YouTube video I've been watching to prep for this exam. A little drier than the first few but they do a great job of covering the material.

Overview of Sig Figs

What I understand of Sig Figs is basically that they are all the numbers represented when a number is written in scientific notation. Trying to remember all the rules of whether a number is significant or not is a little too much to think about converting it to scientific notation is a lot easier.
As for math functions, sig figs get rather confusing, all I can say is remember that rounding is always to the least accurate number and that the least accurate number in adding (or subtracting) is the one with the least decimals while the least accurate number in multiplication (or division) is the one with the least sig figs. Other than that, remember states of matter, types of mixtures, and nomenclature. That should be it for the next quiz.

Also these link will help. The bottom two are a little elementary but they explain the topic quite nicely.

Chem Club Awesomeness

For this very special day in the chemistry we did an "explosive" experiment and it was really cool...Sorry for the vertical video :)

Pre Test

We had our pre-test and I'm feeling decent for this next chapter. I couldn't remember how to add and subtract sig figs but I think I rembered how to figure out how sig figs were in a number... maybe. Other than that this will be an interesting chapter.

Summary over our Unit

First off -or last off, I guess- we took our unit test for radioactive decay and atomic structure. I think I did well but maybe not good enough. My grade in the class plummeted after the frontier chemistry project and since I have struggled to pull it back up. The unit wasn't to confusing as, at least for me, the math wasn't to difficult as I have encountered these problems in other classes. What got me on the test were a few specific questions. I know I got at least one polyatomic question wrong as I decided it was to my best interest to study the other parts of the unit. I guess this turned out to be a bit of a mistake. I really should have studied those a little more. Oh well. Anyways, before the test we did a lab over half life and archaeology. I rather enjoyed the lab as it was a great review over what we had just learned in class. Also, this was the first time we had used Excel in this class. For myself, this came as no difficulty since I had learned how to analyze data tables and graphs in Physics I last year. Overall I liked the lab even though to complete it, Mikayla, Evan, and I (as well as the rest of the class...obviously) had to cut out over 500 half inch square pieces of paper by hand.

All in all, I think this unit went well, I'm really hope that the Star Log Project will cancel out how poorly I did on the frontier chemistry project.

P.S. Linked below are some videos I found useful during this unit, I realize they are now useless for us who are taking Chemistry now but if this blog is around next year hopefully these links will be useful to the next year.

Another Useful Link

Here's a real quick data base for a bunch of stars. It gives the address and the spectral type of A LOT of Stars. It helped me a lot.

Supermoon Lunar Eclipse 2015

This doesn't have to do with chemistry more so it has to do with our astronomy supplement studies. Tonight there will be a Supermoon Lunar Eclipse, basically it's a lunar eclipse that occurs when the moon is at the closest point in it's orbit and is up to 14% larger than a regular full moon. I'm really excited. It will begin at around 9pm CST and it will go till about 10:30pm CST.

Here's a video explaining what it is.

Late to the post...again

Two days ago we did a lab to understand the math behind finding the average mass of isotopes. First, we counted different "isotopes" of beans that had different masses. Then we weighed them and did a bit of math tho solve for average mass and percent abundance. I found it tremendously simple frankly but fun nonetheless. Anyways, I need to finish the lab report for it.

Quiz over Atomic Structure and History

Just finished a quiz. I think I did alright. I had a bit of trouble remembering the scientists but other than that I think I did all right.

That's it for now,
