Another Useful Link

Here's a real quick data base for a bunch of stars. It gives the address and the spectral type of A LOT of Stars. It helped me a lot.

Rather useful video explaining the chemical composition of stars, how it is figured out, and why it works.

Supermoon Lunar Eclipse 2015

This doesn't have to do with chemistry more so it has to do with our astronomy supplement studies. Tonight there will be a Supermoon Lunar Eclipse, basically it's a lunar eclipse that occurs when the moon is at the closest point in it's orbit and is up to 14% larger than a regular full moon. I'm really excited. It will begin at around 9pm CST and it will go till about 10:30pm CST.

Here's a video explaining what it is.

Late to the post...again

Two days ago we did a lab to understand the math behind finding the average mass of isotopes. First, we counted different "isotopes" of beans that had different masses. Then we weighed them and did a bit of math tho solve for average mass and percent abundance. I found it tremendously simple frankly but fun nonetheless. Anyways, I need to finish the lab report for it.

Quiz over Atomic Structure and History

Just finished a quiz. I think I did alright. I had a bit of trouble remembering the scientists but other than that I think I did all right.

That's it for now,

Finding Average Atomic Weight and Percent Abundance

Just a quick post on what we learned yesterday in class. We learned about finding the average atomic weight of elements knowing the abundance of each isotope along with each's mass. We also learned how to do this in the other direction: finding the percent abundance knowing the weight of each isotope and the average weight. We are also doing a lab today  over what we learned. We will be representing different beans as different isotopes. It should be pretty fun.

History of Atomic Chemistry

Just found this video over what we just learned in class.

The video goes over the history of atomic chemistry...no duh.... but it also goes over the basic idea behind quantum theory. Basically, the middle part of the video is the useful part the rest s enrichment.

Still an awesome video though. Something tells me that Crash Course Chemistry will help me quite a bit in this course.

Anyways,

Rutherford's Marble

To illustrate the difficulty of Rutherford's experiment, we performed an activity that bounced a small marble in an opaque petri dish to find the shape anchored on the inside. We had to used the sound created by the marble to find out what was inside. It was tremendously difficult! I was fun though.

Radioactive decay Pre-Test

Little late to the post but I want to blog on the the pre-test we took yesterday. Honestly said, I think I did ok...? I knew how to do radioactive decay since I did that in calc last year but past that I just made my best guess and moved on through the test.

Type One and Two Nomenclature Success

The main difference between type one and two nomenclature is the fact that some metals can have more than one charge. Type 2 nomenclature requires one to indicate the charge.
